FAQs

What do I need to get started?

We’ve written a pretty helpful article that covers all the typical startup payroll and benefits basics for new businesses. Take a look, and for answers to more specific questions, keep reading these FAQs.

Can I run payroll myself?

You can, but you should know that it’s sometimes complicated and almost always time consuming. A study conducted by QuickBooks showed that business owners spend 4 hours and 52 minutes on calculating, filing and tax preparation each pay period. So, whether you decide to go it alone or want help, we have the options you’re looking for, and we’re here for you.

How often do I have to pay my employees?

It depends on what state you live in. Each state is in charge of setting a minimally allowable pay frequency. The federal government doesn’t have country-wide requirements, but it does say that employers have to maintain a consistent pay frequency. So, if you pay bi-weekly, you can’t suddenly decide to pay monthly and then switch back (for example). Learn more about your options here.

How do I deal with 1099s?

As a small business, you might have a mix of permanent, W2 workers, and contracted, 1099-ers on staff. The way you designate, manage, pay and file taxes on each differs. We’ve laid all the basics out for you in a super-helpful article, and are happy to chat more about it with you if you’d like. (It’s what we do.)
